WHAT ARE NEUROMODULATORS?
Neuromodulators are substances that alter the way nerves communicate with one another. In aesthetics, neuromodulators refer to purified botulinum toxin, type A, which is injected into the skin, resulting in the relaxation of targeted muscles, and ultimately the reduced appearance of rhtytids, or wrinkles.
Neuromodulators are a great solution to treat, reduce and prevent fine lines and wrinkles on the face and neck. Neuromodulators can also be used to treat excess sweating (Hyperhidrosis), chronic jaw pain (TMJ dysfunction), and even Migraines. There is minimal downtime and results typically last 3 – 4 months. Most procedures take 15 – 20 minutes.
In the United States, (6) Type A neuromodulators (Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, Jeuveau, Daxxify, Letybo), are FDA approved for the temporary improvement of moderate to severe fine lines and wrinkles. And there is (1) Type B neuromodulator (Myobloc), which is FDA approved for the temporary improvement of painful neck spasms.

NEUROMODULATORS: WHAT TO EXPECT?
Before & During Typical Wrinkle Relaxation Treatment:
- We’ll begin with a personalized assessment of your skin and assess for the appearance of dynamic and/or static wrinkles.
- Dynamic wrinkles appear with facial movements (like smiling, drowning, squinting, or raising of the eyebrows). These wrinkles are caused by repetitive muscle contractions. Examples include the “11s” or “crows feet.” These are the type of wrinkles that respond well to neuromodulators.
- Static wrinkles are visible when the face is at rest and are due to skin aging, loss of collagen and elastin, sun damage, in addition to long-standing dynamic facial movements. Examples include the “smile lines,” “smoker’s lines” and the “fine lines” under the eyes and along the cheeks or neck. This type of wrinkle is best managed with a holistic skincare regimen that aims to promote improved skin texture and tone, along with building collagen. Treatments include laser resurfacing, microneedling, chemical peels, dermal fillers, and topical retinoids.
- The skin is gently cleansed
- Neuromodulators are injected into the muscle at precise locations to achieve the desired look.
After Typical Wrinkle Relaxation Treatment:
- Bruising may occur with injections, particularly for those taking medications such as Aspirin, NSAIDs, blood thinners, vitamin E, or fish oils. Applying arnica topically can help to minimize bruising
- Expect full results in 2 weeks
- A complimentary 2 week follow up with be scheduled to determine if touch up doses of Neuromodulator are needed
