Dermal Fillers are biocompatible substances that are injected into the skin to (1) restore volume, (2) diminish fine lines and wrinkles, and (3) improve skin quality.
Dermal fillers can be temporary, semi-permanent, or permanent.
Temporary dermal fillers are composed of hyaluronic acid, which is a naturally occurring sugar that exists in the extracellular matrix of human tissue. It is manufactured as a sterile, biodegradable, non-pyrogenic, viscoelastic, clear and colorless gel implant. It works by pulling in water, which smooths away fine lines and wrinkles and restores volume. Results can last up to 2 years. Hyaluronic acid fillers are safe and effective, but if there are complications related to the injection such as asymmetry or vascular compromise, it can be dissolved with Hyaluronidase (Hylenex), an enzyme that breaks down hyaluronic acid.

Semi-permanent dermal fillers and permanent dermal fillers are also known as biostimulants. Biostimulants are naturally occurring, biocompatible and biodegradable substances that are morphogenic, meaning that when injected into tissue, they stimulate the regeneration of that particular tissue. For example, when biostimulants are injected into the skin, they can stimulate fibroblast cells to produce collagen. And when biostimulants are injected into areas of fat, they can stimulate adipose tissue to produce more fat cells, which can help with volume loss. The biostimulant is then degraded and absorbed by the body over time, leaving behind collagen or fat that has been naturally produced by the body, resulting in long lasting improvement in skin volume, definition, contour, and quality. Results can last up to 5 years plus.
